Packers verses Vikings has been warmly received by the reading public, and has even gathered some pretty positive reviews: Packer prose reads more like a diary to beloved team.BY HOLLIS NORMAN, The Daily Telegram Published Saturday, January 20, 2007 After reviewing “From Where the Rivers Come,” by Richard Solly, an accomplished scholar and poet, reviewing Carl “Gator” Nelson’s Packers “verses” Vikings is a cumbersome, if not, “cheesy” prospect. But one has to admire Nelson’s zeal for packer poetry even if his rhyming verse doesn’t inspire the reader — unless it’s to watch or play more football. More like a diary/scrapbook of the Packer’s career from 1996 to 2006, Packers “verses” Vikings is a complete history of the game of football from a Cheesehead’s point of view. And one can’t help but marvel at the dedication of a fan so willing to pen packer-inspired poetry every week! — an obvious testimony to the Green Bay team. As the name of the book implies, the Vikings are an important part of the Packers equation. Packers without Vikings is like a grilled cheese without the cheese. A Packer’s victory is joyless without their nemesis’ across the bridge crying in their Budweiser. But, the rivalry isn’t a acrimonious one, as there are photos sprinkled throughout the book of Vikings fans in full purple and gold regalia. The over-sized hardcover book is loaded with poems all about football for all-about-football fans of all ages. Black and white photos of friends, kids, and grandkids happily smiling or posing (oftentimes in Packer apparel — whether jerseys, caps or the ubiquitous cheese wedge hats) for the camera abound on every page. And if the successful book-launching brawl — I mean — party at the Keyport on Dec. 21st was any indication — the book may now be able to boast the ability to incite riots over miniature Packers football give-a-ways — complete with not only phone calls to the police, but an arrest as well! Packer’s poetry is not only sure to entertain and maybe even amuse the lovers of the game of football, but will also inform the sadly uninformed un-Packer’s fans. Oddly enough, Packer’s Poet, Carl “Gator” Nelson lives in Duluth with his wife, Debbie. Packers VS. Vikings Carl “Gator” Nelson a devoted Packers fan/poet has decided to write a book Packers vs. Vikings a Poetic Perspective. A book about games of rivals, the Packers and the Vikings. This book of rivalry is filled with poems about the Vikings and the Packers, pictures of some of the Packer fans. Just a heads up for you Viking fans the book kind of leans towards the Packers. The book costs $20.00 until Tuesday, December 19 then the book costs $24.95. Sunday, December 17, 2006 he and his wife, Debbie (a Vikings fan) hosted Packers vs. Vikings party at the Blackwoods in Proctor where they invited friends, fans, and family. Past Event News Kickoff Parties HUGE Success. Kickoff Party Poem - "The Fight" Coach Carl "Gator" Nelson joined WDSE anchor Karen Sunderman for some delightful sports talk on Venture North. Carl shared a brief history of his start as an aspiring poet, and read one of his archived Packer/Viking poems. The episode aired on November 23 rd and was a real treat to do. Thanks to Karen and the folks at WDSE for this opportunity to share some of this unique writing ! “Coach Carl was also interviewed by Jason Kuss of KBJR’s “Sportszone” program on December 17 th. Jason appeared to be so impressed by the book that he ordered one of his very own ! Thanks for the airtime, Jason and KBJR..... Coach Carl was also contacted by WITI FOX6 TV from Milwaukee, and we’ll watch to see what comes from that contact.
